Department of Medicine

Introduction

The Department of Medicine established in the Graduate School of Yonsei University in 1953, is striving to fostering honorable educators and workers under the educational goal of the School. The purpose of this medical school is to cultivate originality and research ability, and to bring up outstanding research workers and competent professors on the basis of Christian spirit for contributing to the development of medicine. Currently, there are thirty sectional majors in the department of medicine and about 760 students in the Masters and Doctoral programs.

Masters Degree in Medicine

  • Application and Admission to the Program for the Master's Degree

    Applicants with a Bachelors degree either in Medicine or Science from an accredited college may be admitted after appraisal. The applicants are appraised based on the academic achievements of their undergraduate course and oral examinations, with or without written examinations, in the student's major field of Medical Science and in English.

  • Requirements for the Master's Degree
    • Two academic years or four semesters of enrollment, but no more than four calendar years.
    • Completion of a minimum of 30 credits with a grade point average of 3.00 or better out of 4.30
    • Satisfactory score of authorized English test including TOEFL, TOEIC or TEPS.
    • Satisfactory performance on the comprehensive written examination in the two subjects of Medicine
    • Completion of a thesis acceptable to the thesis committee. The members of thesis committee are appointed by the Graduate Education Committee.
    • Satisfactory performance in the final defense (oral examination) before the thesis committee. Any decision concerning the thesis is determined by a two-thirds majority vote.

Doctoral Degree in Medicine

  • Application and Admission to the Program for the Doctor of Philosophy

    Applicants with a masters degree in medicine from an accredited graduate school may be admitted after appraisal. The applicants are appraised based on the academic achievements in their undergraduate courses as well as oral examinations (with or without written examinations) in the student's major field of Medicine and English.

  • Requirements for the Doctor of Philosophy
    • More than five semester years but no more than seven calendar years of enrollment.
    • Completion of a minimum of 54 credits with a grade point average of 3.00 or better out of 4.30
    • Satisfactory score of authorized English test such as TOEFL, TOEIC or TEPS.
    • Satisfactory performance in comprehensive written examination in three subjects of medicine.
    • Completion of a thesis acceptable to the thesis committee. The members of the thesis committee are appointed by the Graduate Education Committee and headed by the student's advisor.
    • Satisfactory performance in the final defense (oral examinations) before the thesis committee. Any decision concerning the thesis is determined by a four-fifths majority vote.

      Required courses have been minimized from the 2nd semester of 2019 to strengthen student-oriented education and reduce the number of required courses. Excluding 15 credits(required course credits), the remaining credits(Elective) can be taken regardless of the department and subject type.
      ※Discontinuation of Integrated Course: In the case of students who choose to discontinue their integrated course to obtain master's degree, the master's degree program is applied.
